In this lively workshop, Jo-Anne Hart will introduce you to practical strategies for using technology to enhance any social studies class for grades nine through twelve. You will participate in activities you can use with your students and receive handouts to take back with you to your classroom. Curriculum Activities You will leave the workshop with technology activities and tools that you can put to use immediately in any area of social studies. Whether you are teaching civics, geography, history, or another aspect of social studies, skillful use of the Internet and of research databases can enhance your classes in a way that appeals to today's students. The workshop will have you extend learning beyond what could be accomplished without technology. All the strategies use technology effectively in context. Primary Sources, Global Connections, Citizen Participation Among the topics covered will be effective use of primary sources and digital archives, with specific recommendations and ideas. The Internet offers an unprecedented opportunity to add a global dimension to social studies, both contemporary and historic. You will learn about tools that help students make global connections across curriculum topics. Since governments have provided some of the most accessible and appropriate websites and online materials, technology also opens up opporutunities to foster the skills and knowledge needed to be an active citizen. Professional Development CEUs Two (2) Rhode Island contact hours are available for participating in this workshop, as administered by RIDE's Office of Teacher Preparation, Certification and Professional Development.
