In this lively workshop, Barbara Meagher will introduce you to practical strategies for teaching the new civics standards to grades nine through twelve. You will participate in activities you can use with your students and receive a 16-minute DVD for classroom use as well as an extensive curriculum guide. Curriculum Activities and Guide You will leave the workshop with curriculum applications on the importance of freedom of information in a democracy, related to the First Amendment but focused specifically on Rhode Island. They include materials on case studies from Rhode Island about access to public records and the role of journalists in providing the public with information necessary for an informed electorate. Sixteen-Minute DVD to Use in Class You will receive a DVD developed by Professor Meagher and ACCESS/RI, a non-profit organization dedicated to public access to information. The DVD features three case studies about journalists and access to public records in Rhode Island. The workshop also provides an extensive curriculum guide from the NFOIC (National Freedom of Information Coalition). Professional Development CEUs Two (2) Rhode Island contact hours are available for participating in this workshop, as administered by RIDE's Office of Teacher Preparation, Certification and Professional Development.
